Chingaren residents protest against land acquisition

Imphal, Jan 12 : DEMANDING review to the government decision to establish industrial growth centre at Chingaren, affected people of the area stormed the residence of Commerce and Industries Minister Y Irabot at Porompat today.

The anguish people are protesting against the decision of the cabinet to construct an Industrial Growth Centre over the vast areas of Chingarel paddy field which will amount to snatching of living ways of thousands of people cultivating fields.

The acceptance to the proposal of constructing an Industrial Growth Centre (IGC) by the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) Government led by CM O Ibobi as a progressive step of development may give birth to another major agitation including general strike in the state, the protest hinted.

The SDPO of Imphal West District consoled the anguished public stating that the minister is not at home while receiving the memorandum submitted by the people assuring that he will hand over it to the minister.

In the memorandum JAC against the construction of IGC over the land of Chingarel paddy field expressed strong opposition to the government plan and appealed to withdraw the resolution passed by the cabinet.

The protestors carried with placards written as Loumigi Punshi Kallu, Loukon Kanbada Thawai Kathokpa Keegumshi, Manipurgi Praja Chara Helhandanaba Upai Thiyu, Car Tongkhibada Chara Henba Kaorabara and Conservation of Paddy Land and Wet Land Bill Puthoktuna Loupham Kallu.

The JAC represented by the residents of Sawombung, Waiton, Tejpur, Mani Yaishkul and Khurai will visit the Commerce and Industrial Minister Y Irabot at his office to talk on the issue tomorrow afternoon.

The Secretary of the JAC against construction of IGC at Chingarel Loukol, Sanasam Chandra Kumar while talking to the media said that the JAC cannot accept cabinet decision to shift the site for the construction of IGC from Napet Palli to Chingarel.

He also said that abandoning a productive paddy field of 500 acres which is feeding the people of the state arbitrarily with power to construct IGC in disguise of development by the Government led by Ibobi is an unclean politics.

In case, if the government does not give any assurance to step back from the resolution, the JAC will impose bandh of Ukhrul road, statewide general strike and also mass rallies within this month.

The secretary of the JAC further said that another incident which more intensive than the June 18 agitation will be launched if the government does not consider their demand.
