MEELAL urges to use Meitei Mayek Name plates

Imphal, January 23: Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has reiterated its appeal to the people of Manipur to use Meetei Mayek in the name plates of their two wheelers and four wheeler engined vehicles within February 28 .

Addressing a press conference in this connection at its office today, vice president of MEELAL Tomba Mangang said that the appeal has been made as part of the efforts being made by organisation for development and popularising of the indigenous scripts.

MEELAL president Yumjao, who was also present at the occasion, noted that the Government of Manipur has taken up certain steps towards revival of Meetei Mayek.

Among these steps, over and above making Meetei Mayek compulsory till class V, a series of book titled 'Meetei Mayekna Lamjingba' would be henceforth introduced from class VI to X.This book would be studied as a part of the Manipuri subject and would carry 30 marks, he informed.

Announcing that a 6-month certificate course on Meetei Mayek would be introduced in Manipur University, Yumjao further informed that the Government has also given its approval to the conduct of an eligibility test by the SCERT to find out whether the teachers are conversant of Meetei Mayek or not.
