Imphal: Security personnel combed different parts of Imphal East district to trace the two kidnapped engineers of Manipur power department as several organizations today appealed to the abductors not to extort money from government departments and release the duo unharmed.
A police team, supported by other security personnel, searched Khurai, Kongpal and other places in Imphal East district in past few days following report that the kidnapped officials were being kept somewhere in the district, a senior police official said.
The newly-formed United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) earlier claimed responsibility for the abduction of Executive engineer TH Tomalchan and section officer of the department L Mangi, who were taken away at gun-point from near their houses at Kongpal and Khurai area in Imphal East on November 6 and demanded a payment of Rs. 15 crore by the department for their safe release.
While various social organisations called upon the ultras to ensure safe release of the officials and not to indulge in extortion from government departments, a power department official confirmed attempts were being made to rescue the officials "by using various means."
