MUSU suspends strike

Imphal, February 16 : The six-day long strike of the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has been suspended with immediate effect as the striking students arrived at an agreement with the authority of the Manipur University during a meeting held today at Hotel Anand Continental here.

A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the two sides at the meeting between the representatives of MUSU led by its president Ksh Narayan and the authority of the University led by Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ch Amuba.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar of the University were also present at the meeting.

Among those things, both sides agreed to start the recruitment process for faculty positions in various disciplines which have been cancelled since February 10 from February 28 with the condition that there will be no reduction or change in the number of vacancies for faculty positions as advertised earlier.

Both sides also agreed to maintain transparency and accountability for uniform screening process/criteria in the subsequent recruitment process for various faculty positions and others in the university and to expedite the promotion of university teaching and non-teaching staff who are already due under Career Advance Scheme (CAS) .

In the meeting the VC, Pro VC and Registrar also agreed to ensure not to recur any lapses in the recruitment process as top functionaries of the university.

In anticipation that the university authority shall honour the resolutions of the meeting, MUSU also agreed to suspend the six day old stir, said the memorandum of understanding signed today in the meeting which aimed at bringing an end to the impasse due to the stand off following the alleged lapse and shortcomings in the recruitment of faculty position and others.

The dean of students' welfare, MU also took part in the meeting.
