IMPHAL, Jan 17: A one day consultative meeting on the role of media in combating violence against women was held today at Hotel Imphal with the main objective of the focusing media in fighting the crimes against women.
The consultation programme was organized by Women Action for Development (WAD), Imphal and in this connection the Journalist award - 2009 instituted by the WAD was also distributed to seven journalists who have contributed their works in fighting crimes against women.
The journalists awarded by WAD include Kakchingtabam Vedajit Sharma of Ireibak daily and Liklaileima of the Sangai Express. Premchand Thongam of Poknapham daily and three other reporter of different local newspaper were also given consolation prizes while a special award was given to a reporter of ISTV Nework, who contributed his work on the issue through electronic media.
The consultation programme was today attended by Birjit Ngangomba, eminent Sumang Leela director, Yumnam Rupachandra, editor ISTV News and Professor Ksh. Bimola Devi, department of Political Science, Manipur University as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
The consultative meeting was also attended by Khellen Thokchom, correspondence, The Telegraph, OJ Meetei, consultant, United NGOs Mission, Manipur and Irengbam Arun, editor, Ireibak daily.
In his speech at the meet, Birjit Ngangomba maintained that many of the NGO/organisations working towards uprooting violence against women in the state are finding difficulties in extorting root cause of the problem though these organisations are emphasizing on their work at the best level.
He further said that women are born with three phases of their life and these phases are very much important in shaping their life. As a women’s life is considered incomplete devoid of these phases, women need to know their responsibilities and duty. Every women should also posses moral characters that are hallmark of a typical women, he added.
He also called upon people to work together in order to tackle problems being faced women and also to know root cause of violence against women.
Irengbam Arun in his deliberation noted that women are being discriminated in many ways in the modern world and they are also denied to be part of decision making.
Arun also stressed the need for working together amongst people so as allow women to take part in the decision making and ultimately to fight crime against women.
Yumnam Rupachandra, also observed that crime against women need to fight earnestly its rate is increasing alarmingly in the contemporary Manipuri society.
